- Aims of the course This course provides an integrated 3-year training in counselling psychology, leading to Chartered Status with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and a doctoral level practitioner qualification. The course integrates psychological theory and research with insights derived from personal inquiry and development. It incorporates both Scientist-Practitioner and Reflective-Practitioner perspectives. The training has been designed to provide professional, clinical and academic competencies associated with the practice of counselling psychology to a doctoral standard, as identified by the BPS. The course aims to: develop trainees' clinical competencies in cognitive-behaviour therapy and give them a working knowledge of the psychodynamic approach enable trainees to develop high quality research skills in conducting and evaluating research and to apply those skills in understanding and evaluating clinical practice enable trainees to develop an ethical, critical and self-reflective approach to work enable trainees to work at different levels within a range of organisations and to be versatile in their practice develop trainees' multidisciplinary teamwork abilities, particularly in medical settings train counselling psychologists to recognise the influence of contextual factors upon practice.
