Program Description:

The Master of Science in Athletic Training is designed as a professional degree for persons entering the field of athletic training. The degree is designed to prepare individuals for positions as athletic trainers in a variety of employment settings. The program integrates didactic and clinical experiences to promote critical thinking, psychomotor skill, professional decision making, and collaboration to prepare students to serve as professionals in the field of athletic training.

LR’s Athletic Training faculty are dedicated educators and professionals with all appropriate credentials. In addition to the faculty, a variety of certified athletic trainers and medical professionals serve as clinical instructors in a variety of employment settings, including collegiate athletics, public schools, orthopedic clinics, rehabilitation settings, general medical facilities, and other special programs.

CURRICULAR OPTIONS

There are several curricular programs for students interested in Athletic Training at Lenoir-Rhyne University. Regardless of the option chosen, the MS in Athletic Training is a cohort program that begins with the first summer session each year (typically mid-summer). Accepted students complete nine credit hours during the summer that spans both summer sessions during their first year.

Professional Track (Traditional Graduate Track): A student who possesses a baccalaureate degree can apply directly into the professional phase of the program. They must meet the Graduate School Admission Criteria and have the appropriate prerequisite coursework.

Five Year Option (Undergraduate/Graduate Track): The Five Year Option is a freshman-entry track with 3 years of study in the pre-professional phase and 2 years in the professional phase of the program. After the fourth year successful students will earn an undergraduate degree and after the fifth year qualified students will earn a Master of Science in Athletic Training. Students in this track must meet the Graduate School Admission Criteria prior to enrolling in the professional phase of the program. Undergraduate options for major for this track include:

• Sports Management (BA)
• Community Health (BS)
• Exercise Science (BS)

 

Please note: Students may not begin the professional phase of the Master of Science in Athletic Training while participating in intercollegiate sports.
