Program Description:

LR’s Master of Arts degree in Liberal Studies, administered by the Office of Graduate and Adult Learning, provides a unique graduate opportunity for adults who want to challenge and enrich themselves intellectually through interdisciplinary study. The program allows students, with the guidance of a select committee and faculty advisor, to create their own programs of study that goes beyond scope of a single discipline.

The program is unique to LR in that the student completes a series of core seminars intentionally related to the University’s common learning goals. The notion is that liberal learning is central to the program, as in the university’s mission statement, which emphasizes the development of a whole person, the liberation of the mind and spirit, clarification of personal faith, physical wellbeing, the sense of self in the community, and leadership for service in a global context. In addition,

Graduate programs in liberal studies appeal to a broad audience. It specifically is designed for those who enjoy learning new ideas in a culture of academic inquiry. It allows students to explore timeless and timely human questions within the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. It also offers professionals the opportunity to pursue an advanced degree in order to advance their careers.

CURRICULAR OPTIONS

The Liberal Studies program is a 30-hour program designed to furnish the adult student a substantial amount of freedom in crafting her/his program. In addition, it combines in-class work with community engagement. Students complete coursework that focuses upon a meaningful service learning/community engagement project; a final capstone seminar with a culminating project and portfolio; three seminars that correspond to LR’s common learning goals (care & responsibility; knowledge & understanding; communication & rhetoric); and, finally, additional hours designed and approved to meet the student’s personal learning objectives.
