Program Overview

Program Description:
A program of graduate study leading to the M.Sc. degree is offered in the Department of Biology within the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies. The interests of the full-time faculty (12) and adjunct staff members (10) focus on Boreal, Terrestrial and Aquatic Biology. The Department can normally accommodate about 20 students. Facilities are available for field and/or laboratory research in the areas of basic and applied plant/animal ecology and physiology, as well as tree growth and genetics. Some of the specific areas of research include plant ecology, vegetation studies with emphasis on regeneration strategies of plants, biodiversity and old growth forest dynamics, biology of populations, community, evolutionary, and conservation ecology, systematics, forest tree demography, feminist science and pedagogy, social ecology, food microbiology, environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, plant morphogenesis, plant molecular biology and physiology, avian behaviour, fish and wildlife parasitology, ichthyology, fisheries and wildlife biology, fish endocrinology and physiology, and the biology of water pollution. Other areas of research on mammalian molecular genetics, carried out at the Northwestern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre, includes cancer biology, tumor progression, cell cycle regulation, gene expression and chromosome structure.

Additional Program Information

Accreditation:
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
International Requirements:
Applicants for admission must be graduates of a recognized university, college or institute, and show evidence of scholarly achievement. Except where otherwise stated in the Admission Requirements of a particular program, degree students must have a four year Bachelor's degree or its equivalent with at least second class standing (B). An applicant holding a degree other than one in the discipline area to which admission is sought will be considered on the basis of undergraduate courses taken and academic standing. A qualifying year may be required to meet the admission standards. Applicants applying from a university other than Lakehead University must forward official transcripts of their university record and may be required to take an examination, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Meeting the minimum requirements does not necessarily guarantee admission. No candidate will be admitted unless the academic unit recommends admission.
