Program Overview

Program Description:

The Department of English is offering an innovative Master of Arts degree program that builds upon the model established by the University’s successful Master of Arts program in History. The curriculum has two tracks: one for middle or secondary school teachers (the M.A. for Educators) and one for other professionals (the M.A. in English in Literary and Cultural Studies).  Teachers are not restricted to the first track and may matriculate into the other professional M.A. track.  Neither track leads to Pennsylvania teacher certification, although graduate students in the M.A. Program in Education who need additional English courses to complete certification requirements may take relevant courses in the graduate English program.

The M.A. in English for Educators requires 9 courses plus a critical-pedagogical project for a total of 30 credits. The M.A. in English in Literary and Cultural Studies also requires 9 courses plus either a thesis or a comprehensive examination for a total of 30 credits.
