Program Overview
- Program Description:
- Master of Science in Integrative Biology Beginning in the 2012 Fall Semester, the Department of Biology and Physics will offer a Master of Science in Integrative Biology (MSIB). The program of study is research-based requiring each graduate student generate a thesis based on original research. While students will center their research within a particular area of biology based on faculty expertise, students will be trained in an integrative paradigm that incorporates scales and disciplines within biology and outside of biology through course work and collaboration. It is expected that a student's thesis research will be influenced and enhanced by this approach, and that graduates will be more versatile than conventionally-trained graduates because they can provide connectivity in interdisciplinary teams and adaptability to changing workplace needs in industry, research, and education. The Program Students in our Master of Science in Integrative Biology (MSIB) program are trained in the integrative paradigm through courses that incorporate scales and disciplines within and beyond biology, and by the structure of thesis committees where at least one of the three members is from outside the major professor's sub-discipline. Such a foundation develops ways of thinking that allow students to recognize and expand upon the integrative nature of modern biology. In addition to a thesis generated by original research, the degree requires 36 credit hours total: 11 credit hours Thesis Research, 12 credit hours of required graduate courses (including 2 Graduate Seminar experiences), and another 13 credit hours of graduate-level electives. For more information, download the MSIB Program Description for Prospective Students at the bottom of the page. Requirements Successful candidates will typically have completed requirements for the bachelor degree and demonstrate core competency as reflected by the record of undergraduate coursework in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, with a degree focus in one of these areas, have scores on the Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) above the 50% rank, have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), and have conversed with (via email, telephone, or in person) at least one faculty member in the Department of Biology and Physics concerning potential thesis research projects.
