Program Overview

Program Description:
The three contributing universities of Keele, Salford and Manchester have considerable complementary research experience in the biology of parasites and the vectors which transmit them. This has led to the development of this unique, pioneering joint MSc degree between the three institutions, focusing on molecular biology, aspects of parasite infections and vector biology. The initial teaching is based at Salford but is undertaken by staff from all three institutions. Students are then able to carry out an extensive research project in one of the three universities. The course focuses on the molecular aspects of parasitic infections and on vector biology and control and will appeal to recent graduates wishing to further their training before embarking upon a research career in Entomology, Parasitology, Molecular Biology or Immunology; to those considering a career in Biotechnology; and to overseas students seeking specialist training before entering a career in managing parasitological or vector-related research and control appropriate to their own country. Research at Keele is organised within seven Research Institutes with the School of Life Sciences contributing mainly to the Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine (ISTM). This has four principal themes, including infection, inflammation and incorporates the Centre for Applied Entomology and Parasitology (CAEP). In the UK Research Assessment Exercise 2008, 90% of the Institute’s submitted staff were rated as international quality researcher, with 10% ranked as world leading. The research facilities were commended as ‘internationally recognised, excellent standard’, specifically noting the University’s support for development of the Institute since 2001.
