Program Overview

Program Description:

The JD/MBA program provides graduates with two valuable degrees: a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from the College of Law and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the College of Professional Studies. The joint degree emphasizes the values of social justice and community service with a focus on socially responsible business practices and sustainable organizational development and operations. The degree is comprised of rigorous graduate coursework in both the legal and business administration fields and is designed to be completed in four years. Students begin their MBA coursework in the Summer Session following their second year of law studies. Over the four-year period, students take all core classes required for the Juris Doctor degree (84 semester units) and all the core courses required in the MBA program (36 quarter units), including the MBA capstone project. The required curriculum is supplemented with a number of law electives relevant to businesses and not-for-profit organizations (e.g., commercial law, tax law, employment and labor law, environmental law). Students may apply for admission to the JD/MBA program initially or they may apply to the JD program first and then apply for the joint program during their first or second year of law school. For students already in the law program, a minimum grade point average of 75 is required for admission to the joint degree program. (Students may be conditionally accepted into the joint degree program pending receipt of grades.) Accreditation:

John F. Kennedy College of Law is accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California and by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Accreditation by the Committee of Bar Examiners permits graduates to take the California Bar Examination upon graduation and, when the graduate passes and complies with all other admission requirements, to practice law anywhere in California, in both State and federal courts. Study at, or graduation from, this law school may not qualify a student to take the bar examination or be admitted to practice law in jurisdictions other than California. A student who intends to seek admission to practice law outside of California should contact the admitting authority in that jurisdiction for information regarding its education and admission requirements.

Requirements:

Applicants to the Juris Doctor program may be admitted with regular or special status, depending on prior education. Those applicants with prior law school credit may be eligible for advanced standing. There are additional requirements for applicants with less than two years of college or university credit or who have prior law school experience.

International Requirements:

In addition to meeting all the general requirements for admission, international applicants must also provide: (1) Certified, English translations of transcripts from all schools attended after high school; (2) A course-by-course evaluation of all transcripts by a Credential Evaluation Service approved by the State Bar of California; (3) Certification of Finances; (4) the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for all applicants whose native language is not English. (For TOEFL, a score of 550 on the paper test, 213 on the computer test or 79-80 on the internet test is required. For IELTS, a score of 6 with no band lower than 5.5 is required.)
