Program Overview

Program Description:
Admission to this program requires fourth-year (bachelor’s) teacher certification in any area. Candidates who have a bachelor’s level certification in a field other than Collaborative Teacher/Special Education must complete SPE 524 and SPE 534 in addition to the courses listed above. Completion of this program leads to eligibility for fifth-year (master’s) teacher certification in collaborative teacher/special education (CLE/K-6 or CLS/6-12 or ECSPE/P-3) If this certification is the initial (first) certification in collaborative teacher/special education (6-12), successful completion of the appropriate Praxis II examination is required before Practicum, SPE 582 and SPE 585. ALTERNATIVE FIFTH-YEAR TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM/SPE: This program is available to students who have completed a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in a field other than teacher education or for initial certification in a second teaching field. Applicants for the alternative fifth-year program must hold a GPA of 2.50 overall in a degree program prior to enrollment in this program. This GPA must be documented on the official transcript of the degree-granting institution and must be the GPA that was used as the basis for granting the degree. The faculty of the College of Education and Professional Studies adopted “The Developing Education Professional as Creative Decision-Maker” as its model, or metaphor, for teacher preparation programs. Teachers must prepare to take on the challenge of the decision-making process knowing that their educational advancement and consequently that of the students they serve, requires a personal commitment to lifelong learning. The various programs prepare teachers who enter the field armed with knowledge gleaned from both its rich history and its state-of-the-art scholarship.
