- Admission to this program requires fourth-year (bachelor’s) teacher certification in elementary education K-6 or Georgia teacher certification in elementary education K-5, early childhood education P-5, or middle grades generalist 4-8. Completion of this program leads to eligibility for fifth-year (master’s) teacher certification elementary education. ALTERNATIVE FIFTH-YEAR TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM/ELEMENTARY EDUCATION: This program is available to students who have completed a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in a field other than teacher education or for initial certification in a second teaching field. Applicants for the alternative fifth-year program must hold a GPA of 2.50 overall in a degree program prior to enrollment in this program. This GPA must be documented on the official transcript of the degree-granting institution and must be the GPA that was used as the basis for granting the degree. The faculty of the College of Education and Professional Studies adopted “The Developing Education Professional as Creative Decision-Maker” as its model, or metaphor, for teacher preparation programs. Teachers must prepare to take on the challenge of the decision-making process knowing that their educational advancement and consequently that of the students they serve, requires a personal commitment to lifelong learning. The various programs prepare teachers who enter the field armed with knowledge gleaned from both its rich history and its state-of-the-art scholarship.

Students seeking alternative fifth-year teacher certification must submit two official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended. Official test scores on the General Test of the GRE or the MAT. Copies of all clear and renewable teaching certificates. Background check. Any candidate applying for admission to a state-approved teacher education program shall be required to be fingerprinted for a criminal history background check through the Alabama State Department of Education to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Three Graduate Reference Forms. If English is not the applicant’s native language, the applicant is required to submit an official TOEFL score report, an IELTS score report, or a PTE score report.
