Program Overview

Program Description:
The School of Health Sciences and Human Performance offers master of science degrees in exercise and sport sciences with concentrations in exercise physiology, sport psychology, and human performance. The human performance concentration is an integration of both physiology and psychology. The graduate program in exercise and sport sciences program typically takes from 12-24 months to complete. Ithaca's facilities and equipment are unrivaled by any school of its size, and class sizes are often about 10 students. This first-rate, inclusive environment creates an atmosphere where faculty members are more than teachers and mentors; they are colleagues and friends. One of the most exceptional aspects of the exercise and sport sciences (ESS) program is its integration of sport psychology and exercise physiology. Faculty in each concentration area collaborate often, and students regularly work on projects that include aspects of psychology and physiology. The belief is that to maximize performance, whether working with patients in a hospital setting or with professional athletes, both mind and body issues need to be addressed. Consideration is given to those applicants whose academic preparation most closely aligns with their intended area of concentration (i.e., exercise physiology, sport psychology, or human performance). Applicants for concentrations in exercise physiology usually have undergraduate degrees in areas such as exercise science, athletic training, nursing, or biology. For the sport psychology concentration, students usually have undergraduate degrees in conceptually related content areas that emphasize psychology. Preference is given to applicants whose files are complete by March 1. Applicants must submit the following: - Online graduate application and essay - Official transcripts from all institutions attended - GRE score - Two letters of recommendation (one additional letter for graduate assistantships)* - Application fee * Graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis and consist of a partial tuition scholarship and an additional work stipend.
