Program Description:

A collaborative spirit and commitment to diversity are the keys to success in Ithaca's childhood education program. This master of science degree prepares academically talented graduate students for careers as elementary school teachers. The 38-credit childhood education program is designed as a cohesive, full-time, 13-month graduate program leading to a master's degree and full eligibility for initial teaching certification for grades 1-6. The childhood education program consists of coursework in educational theory, curriculum, and instruction, as well as yearlong field experiences in school and community settings. The IC program offers multiple opportunities for observing, tutoring, and teaching in varied grade levels in suburban, rural, and urban schools. Graduates of the program have the knowledge and skills to make a positive difference in the lives of the children with whom they work. Program Prerequisites Since the M.S. in childhood education program is intensive, it is important for applicants to have completed some initial study of and experience in the field of education. As a result, the following preprofessional prerequisites have been established for admission: - Approximately 50 hours of documented field experiences in a school setting (IC offers EDUC 21910 Early Field Experience) - A course in the foundations of education (IC offers EDUC 34000 Social and Cultural Foundations of Education) Applicants from other accredited institutions may submit evidence of equivalent courses, as well as satisfactory completion of 50 hours of course-connected field experiences in public schools. Applicants who have not completed these prerequisites may be admitted to the program provisionally and will be expected to enroll in these courses according to an academic plan developed by the chair of graduate programs in education. Preference is given to applicants who files are complete by February 15. Applicants must submit the following: - Online graduate application and essay - Official transcripts from all institutions attended - Two letters of recommendation (one additional letter for graduate assistantships)* Applicants are expected to participate in an on-campus or telephone interview. * Graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis and consist of a partial tuition scholarship and an additional work stipend.

The M.S. in Childhood Education is approved by and registered with the New York Education Department. Graduates of the program are fully eligible for initial teacher certification in the State of New York, which has certification reciprocity with more than 30 other states and jurisdictions.

Admission to the adolescence education program is selective. Applicants must have earned a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 from an accredited college or university. Applicants are expected to proved evidence of the following: - Strong background in the liberal arts and sciences - Commitment to working with diverse students - Interest in innovation and reform in today's schools - Creativity, collaboration, and reflection Preference is given to applicants whose files are complete by February 15.
