Program Description:

Do you have a strong liberal arts background and a passion for making a difference in your community? Our 13-month M.A.T. (master of arts in teaching) program will prepare you to work with -- and inspire -- adolescents in a variety of educational settings. The M.A.T. is available in the following subject areas: - biology - chemistry - English - French - mathematics - physics - social studies - Spanish Graduates of our program are fully eligible for initial teaching certification in the state of New York, which has reciprocity agreements with more than 30 other states and jurisdictions. The M.A.T. program curriculum consists of continued study in the academic area of certification; coursework in educational theory, curriculum, and instruction, and field experiences in varied school and community settings. As part of this program, you'll have opportunities to observe, tutor, and teach with placements ranging from Ithaca-area schools to the Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem. Program Prerequisites Since our M.A.T. program is intensive, we believe it is important for applicants to have completed some initial study of and experience in the field. As a result, we have established the following preprofessional prerequisites for admission: - A documented field experience of approximately 50 hours (IC offers EDUC 21910 Early Field Experience) - A course in educational psychology (IC offers PSYC-21010 Educational Psychology) - A course in the foundations of education (IC offers EDUC-34000 Social and Cultural Foundations of Edu.) Applicants from other accredited institutions may submit evidence of equivalent courses, as well as satisfactory completion of 50 hours of course-connected field experiences in public schools. Applicants who have not completed these prerequisites may be admitted to the program provisionally and will be expected to enroll in these courses according to an academic plan developed by the chair of graduate programs in education.

The M.A.T. in Adolescence Education program is approved by and registered with the New York State Education Department. Graduates of the program are fully eligible for initial teaching certification in the state of New York, which has certification reciprocity agreements with more than 30 other states and jurisdictions.

Admission to the adolescence education program is selective. Applicants must have earned a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 from an accredited college or university. Applicants are expected to provide evidence of the following: - Strong background in the liberal arts and sciences - Commitment to working with diverse students - Interest in innovation and reform in today's schools - Creativity, collaboration, and reflection Preference is given to applicants whose files are complete by February 15. Applicants must submit the following: - Online graduate application and essay - Official transcripts from all institutions attended - Two letters of recommendation (one additional letter for graduate assistantships)* Applicants are expected to participate in on-campus or telephone interviews. *Graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis and consist of a partial tuition scholarship and an additional work stipend.
