Program Overview

Program Description:
The English Language and Business Culture (ELBC) session is an intensive 1-month program that immerses participants in practical academic English and English-speaking business culture. The ELBC furthers participants’ knowledge and use of core academic and business communications skills in English, and provides them with the opportunity to experience English-speaking cultures and business environments. Participants will develop the skills, fluency, and confidence they need to communicate effectively in English – in a range of settings. They will improve their overall abilities in both spoken and written English, as well as their understanding of English-speaking business cultures. On completion of the ELBC, participants will be better prepared to use English at work and in their studies; and possess a deeper understanding of English-speaking business settings. The ELBC is designed for anyone at the high-intermediate level of English or above (TOEFL score of 70 or above) who would like to enhance their English language and communications skills in preparation for further education, university study, or employment in an English-speaking business environment. A placement test may be required. Instructional and practice materials are selected to facilitate mastery of all essential skill areas: listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. Course materials may include textbooks, magazine and newspaper articles, the Internet, ESL software, radio and television programs, and movies. Participants will engage in a range of hands-on activities including cultural and academic discussions, business meetings, and negotiations; reading, discussing, and writing about current and business topics; using business vocabulary; reading and discussing case studies, business texts, and articles; developing business presentation skills; listening to and discussing media broadcasts; and preparing oral presentations.
