Program Description:

The 60-credit degree offers students a wide range of experiences, opportunities, mentorships, and exposure to other practitioners in the international dance field. M.F.A. students and faculty establish a unique community of committed artists/scholars who range in age and experience and are working to sustain their careers and deepen their relationship to dance. All M.F.A. students gather for a total of eight weeks during the summer months. Students are in residence at Hollins for five weeks followed by three weeks in Frankfurt, Germany, at the Forsythe Company Studio and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt. Using the resources of multiple institutions, the program offers three tracks. Year residency track for highly motivated students with a strong interest in expanding their knowledge and experience, especially in their creative work, in an uninterrupted way. Low residency track designed for mid-career artists, teachers, and dance professionals. Three summer track for students who do not meet the necessary professional experience requirements for the low-residency option. The low residency track is designed for mid-career artists, teachers and dance professionals who must study in a limited time frame that accommodates their employment/performance schedule. Accomplished, nationally recognized candidates may receive up to 12 credits for professional experience. Students accepted into the year residency track must be highly motivated with a strong interest in expanding their knowledge and experience in an uninterrupted way. The program offers a flexible yet rigorous course of study and is ideal for recent graduates with an eye on the professional world of dance. There is a three-summer track option for students who do not meet the necessary professional experience requirements for the two-summer low-residency option. This works especially well for international students who need additional time with the course work or with teachers whose schedules are quite demanding through the academic year.

Requirements:

Applicants to the program must hold an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. They must present undergraduate transcripts, three letters of recommendation, resume, artist's statement, a dvd of selected works, the application form, and processing fee.

International Requirements:

In addition to the requirements for all applicants, international applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit the TOEFL scores and the Proficiency in English form. Additionally, all international applicants are required to submit the Certification of Finances form indicating their capacity to pay tuition, fees, living expenses, and other costs associated with participation in the program.
