Program Overview

Program Description:

The full-time programme consists of a first year (or propaedeutic year), followed by a three-year main phase. Each year is subdivided into four ten-week modules. The study programme is made up of a major and a minor. The major consists of (compulsory) courses taught as part of the programme. The minor consists of elective courses offered within your own study programme or at other programmes either at The Hague University of Applied Sciences or another university of applied sciences.

Safety is the product of communal action and therefore requires citizens to actively contribute to its public management. It is the task of specialised professionals to make provisions for such participation, creating a network of all parties in any way involved with safety and security. The Safety and Security Management Studies programme approaches the management of safety and security from the context of urban development.

The curriculum cannot possibly cover all facets of professional practice. As it is simply too broad for this, we offer a selection of subjects which you will be expected to supplement. You will be mentored in this process. One of the most important elements of the programme is making knowledge productive. You will be continually stimulated to actively apply the knowledge you have gained towards safety and security management practice. The programme is based on the method of learning by doing, in which theory is used as a tool to support the projects on which you will be working. As you will enjoy regular contact with safety and security managers throughout the course of the programme, you will need to be prepared to answer critical questions from other professionals in your field.

Setting Description:

Each of the four years is made up of four modules. The programme of modules in the first three years consists of three subjects, a project that reflects current professional practice, personal coaching and an intensive training programme focused on acquiring professional skills. The modules are also offered separately. The Hague University of Applied Sciences collaborates with various other higher education institutions and non-governmental organisations to offer different modules all over the world. Year 1 The first year introduces you to a large number of subjects within the SSMS curriculum. You will spend a lot of time studying textbooks. At the same time you will work on improving your English, as well as your professional skills, such as presenting and debating. Year 2 Year two also has a largely theoretical nature: you will delve deeper into the subjects in the curriculum, continuously improving your English and maintaining your focus on your professional skills. Cost:

The tuition fees for subsidized education are determined by the Dutch Ministry of Education. To (re-)enroll tuition fees should be transferred first. You can pay by bank in one or more instalments. If you are paying in more than one instalment administration costs will be charged.
