Program Description:

The Emory Summer Chinese Program, offered through the Department of Russian, and East Asian Languages and Cultures, provides students an exciting opportunity to study Chinese language, culture, and the arts in Beijing, China's fascinating capital and site of the 2008 Olympic Games. The program collaborates with the prestigious Beijing Normal University, offering courses on Chinese language at all levels and a course on traditional Chinese architectural and ritual spaces taught in English. NO KNOWLEDGE OF MANDARIN CHINESE IS REQUIRED, as beginner students learn practical Mandarin Chinese. Special tutorials will be arranged for heritage speakers of Chinese and for students with two or more years of Chinese. Participants will tour the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City, and see acrobatic and martial arts performances. In addition to excursions to numerous cultural sites in Beijing, a visit to the former imperial palaces in Chengde, Kaifeng and Luoyang and the famous Shaolin Temple are planned.

Academic Focus: This program is open to all majors, but may be particularly suitable to students with academic interests in Chinese Studies (Chinese language, culture, and the arts). Eligibility Requirements: Minimum 2.5 GPA; good academic standing; at least 18 years of age; completion of a full year of college; and currently enrolled at a college/university. Courses: Participants take two courses for a total of 8 Emory credit hours. Summer program credits can be used to satisfy Chinese major and minor requirements.

The total cost of the program includes an academic fee and a program fee for room, partial board, and insurance.
