- Computer security is one of the key issues in contemporary Computing and is relevant to a wide range of activities, including software development, networking and system design. You will gain foundation knowledge in all the key areas of computing, with specialisations on mobile systems and network security. This specialisation is highlighted with hands-on practical work in group and MSc disseration projects. This course is flexible in the mode of delivery, making extensive use of online and blended learning materials, and a key objective of the programme is the integration with professional certification, such as from Cisco Systems, Ethical Hacking, CISSP, and ISO 27001. The School of Computing and the Centre for Distributed Computing and Security have extensive expertise in research, knowledge transfer (KT) and teaching in the areas of security and digital forensics. This includes externally funded research in key domains such as financial crime and intelligence gathering frameworks, through KT work with organisations such as Cisco Systems, DNS Ltd, the FSA, the Scottish Police (SIPR), Sapphire, Scottish Drug Enforcement Agency, and many others. This course is also integrated with industry, with industry-led projects, and links with a wide range of local companies. You will have access to security research seminars with talks from senior industry professionals and state-of-the-art research in digital forensics, computer security, mobile systems and distributed computing. Overall, the aim is to produce a world-leading programme with blended teaching material and support that builds on the existing foundation of research, KT activities and teaching in security and digital forensics. What can Edinburgh Napier offer? Edinburgh Napier University has a purpose-built computing centre with 500 machines available for student use 24 hours a day. Other features include: Four state-of-the-art laboratories with networking and security equipment and a new wireless laboratory with industry standard equipment. A Regional Cisco Academy, and are certified to run accredited Cisco training. There are a number of fully qualified Cisco Instructors as well as Microsoft Certified Trainers. New virtual servers for Cloud-based infrastructures. Online networking devices which can be accessed over the Internet, and which can be configured for real-life situations. These can be booked when required. Membership of the Microsoft Software Development Network - Academic Alliance (MSDN AA) which provides state-of-the-art Microsoft software, such as for advanced server software and software development tools. Extensive hands-on experience in a wide range of subjects including a range of novel network emulators which teach configuration of networking devices, wireless systems and network security. These emulators were developed within the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University, and are used around the World. This emulation relates to Cisco professional certification, which is highly sought-after in business and industry. The course is further supported by: Excellent laboratory facilities in which you'll be trained to become competent in the use of state of the art equipment an online working environment, giving you instant access to lecture notes, coursework, and reading lists. 24 hour access to the 500-seat Jack Kilby computer centre, where you will have use of relevant software packages, plus unrestricted email and web access. Access to our fully-networked library, offering an extensive collection of required course texts specialist staff who are on hand to offer support in learning, language development or personal issues. Our Library Information Service, which can provide a number of useful aids that will help develop study skills - ideal if you are returning to study a personal development tutor. This course is based at Merchiston Campus in the lively Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh. The campus is well catered for by local amenities including cafes and bars, and is a short walk from the beautiful Meadows Park. Merchiston Campus is a unique blend of the past and present. It is home to modern computing facilities as well as the 13th century Napier Tower. What's involved? The programme can be taken either full-time or part-time, and started in January or September. Modules taken for the three trimesters are detailed below. Trimester 1 e-Security. Network Security. Advanced Security and Network Forensics. Trimester 2 Host-based Digital Forensics. Group Project.
