- Program Description:
The Department of Kinesiology, Leisure and Sport Sciences offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Kinesiology and Sport Studies with concentrations in K-12 Physical Education; Exercise Physiology and Performance, and Sport Management. These concentrations are designed to prepare students as master physical education teachers or for positions in rehabilitation programs; corporate and community wellness programs, athletic administration, sport management, motor sport management, and advanced graduate studies. The Kindergarten – 12th grade Physical Education Teaching Concentration is a “master teacher” program, designed to enhance the quality of teaching through a diversity of innovative courses and clinical work. The master teacher program integrates theoretical foundations with diverse project-based learning activities in the community. The curriculum focuses on the broad scope reflective teaching in physical education by emphasizing how physical education is an integral part of the total education of the child. Developmentally appropriate pedagogy is the framework for all activities within K-12 courses. Students are expected to demonstrate various combinations of physical education teaching skills in peer and school-based settings. Micro teaching physical education lessons with audio and videotaped recordings reinforce the importance of self-evaluating teaching to the lifelong growth of a reflective teacher. The K-12 PE Teaching Concentration has a thesis (6 credit hours) or capstone project (3 credit hours) option and can be completed with 36 credit hours. Students who choose the capstone project option will be required to complete an additional 3 credit hour advisor-approved course. This program is designed for students who are currently licensed to teach in any subject area.
