Program Description:

Durham's MA in Socio-Cultural Anthropology provides advanced subject coverage and thorough research training for those whose first degree is not Anthropology. Students are introduced to both classical and contemporary writing and research in the discipline. There is equal emphasis on theoretical and methodological questions, and plenty of opportunity to apply this new knowledge to issues of pressing social concern. A key component of this course is the time given over to reading and discussion. Teaching is carried out in small groups that meet either weekly or fortnightly. Students are encouraged to develop their own ideas in discussion with academic staff and peers. In addition to promoting each student's subject knowledge, the course aims to develop critical, analytical, interpretive, integrative and presentation skills and to provide an opportunity, particularly through the Dissertation, for the student to pursue and report on original research undertaken under expert supervision. Faculty members teaching on this course have considerable experience both in teaching and research. They have conducted (and are conducting) fieldwork across the world and have published highly regarded books and papers on, for instance, politics, family and kinship, religion, the environment, a wide range of development issues, research methods and organisations.
