Durham has a thriving postgraduate community in medieval, early modern and modern history. Supervision is provided by thirty leading academics, whose expertise stretches across the histories of Britain, Europe, Russia, China, the United States and Africa. We offer intensive tuition at MA level and our strong tradition of supporting postgraduate research is demonstrated by the many students who have gone on to successful academic careers.
Durham History Department offers the Early Modern History MA for those wishing to pursue an intensive year of study in History and for those seeking research training in preparation for doctoral study. This course will introduce you to the knowledge, debates and skills necessary to pursuing advanced historical work.
All students take two core modules of Historical Research Methods and Issues in Early Modern History, in addition to two elective modules and a 15,000 word dissertation.

- If English is not your first language, you'll need to show us evidence of your linguistic abilities, such as a certificate from the British Council. You'll usually need an IELTS standard of 6.5 for postgraduate work.
