About the Program

The Master of Arts in Teaching program prepares teachers to meet the challenges of diverse learners in 21st century classrooms. Student are encouraged to observe a variety of learning environments in urban and suburban settings. Drew students prepare for their teaching careers by taking their education out of the classroom with fieldwork experiences, student teaching, and the culminating Teacher Work Sample presentation. Faculty-mentors encourage our future teachers to build their professional networks to successfully transition into the classroom.

Drew’s program leads to a Master of Arts in Teaching degree with certification to teach in elementary or secondary education. We prepare secondary education teachers in the subjects of: art, biology, chemistry, English, French, Italian, math, music, physics, Spanish, social studies or theatre arts.  All teacher candidates are also eligible for certification as Teacher of Students with Disabilities, an essential requirement in today’s educational landscape.

Coursework

The Master of Arts in Teaching (44 credits) is designed for students with a bachelor’s degree who want to teach in elementary, middle or high school. the program offers two scheduling options - 1 year (full-time) and 2 year (part-time). The program requires the completion of 13 courses for secondary education or 12 courses for elementary education, in addition to fieldwork experience, and the culminating Teacher Work Sample. Students are required to complete three distinctive fieldwork experiences which occur throughout the program and are conducted during typical school hours:

• introductory observations in preliminary coursework;
• 150 hours (about 2 days/week)  of observation and instruction in Clinical Practice I in the fall semester; and
• full-time classroom practice during Clinical Practice II in the Spring (formerly Student Teaching).
