Program Overview

Program Description:
The field offers graduate degrees in musicology, composition, and historical performance of eighteenth-century instrumental music. The study of ethnomusicology, music theory, and analysis is assumed to be an integral part of all graduate degree programs in music. Graduate students in musicology or composition may include performance as part of their program. There is no fixed curriculum in any of the degree programs; the program of study of each student is determined by a Special Committee selected by the student. Students may draw minor subjects from the Field of Music and from other fields. Performance can be a part of any graduate program. Students are encouraged to participate in the many university-affiliated performance groups. Opportunities also exist for solo recitals and informal collaboration.
