Program Overview

Program Description:
William & Mary Law School is a full-time, three-year program of study in legal education. Required first-year courses include studies in constitutional law, contracts, torts, civil procedure, property, criminal law and legal skills. Prior to graduation, students must take a second year of legal skills, which includes professional ethics. Through simulated law firms, students in the Legal Skills Program experience and refine many lawyering skills such as interviewing, negotiation, legal briefing, and trial techniques. The Law School provides a wide variety of clinics including: Appellate Litigation, Domestic Violence, Federal Tax Practice, Innocence Project, Legal Aid, Special Education Advocacy and Veterans' Benefits.  In addition, student externships include work in criminal litigation, local/state/federal government, nonprofit organizations and the Virginia General Assembly. Second- and third-year students are encouraged to work in a variety of legal settings, such as private firms and public law offices and legal clinics. The curriculum is enriched by the Institute of Bill of Rights Law, a privately funded organization. The Institute's central focus is scholarship and education on freedom of speech and of the press, with interests also in legal history, legal writing, and professional responsibility. The Law School also houses the technologically advanced McGlothlin Courtroom and the Center for Legal and Court Technology.  Other special programs include the Election Law Program, the Human Security Law Program, the Property Rights Project, the Program in Comparative Legal Studies and Post-Conflict Justice, the VCU-W&M Health Policy and Law Initiative and the George Wythe Society of Citizen Lawyers.
