Program Overview

Program Description:
Teach in the New York City Public Schools while earning your Master’s Degree The Teaching Opportunity Program (TOP) at the City University of New York (CUNY) is a unique program, planned in collaboration with the New York City Department of Education, to attract talented students and career changers to the teaching profession. The program focuses on preparing mathematics, science, and Spanish teachers for middle and high school. After completing an intensive summer program, TOP Scholars begin their teaching jobs earning a full-time salary and benefits as a New York City Public School teacher. While working as a teacher, TOP scholars continue taking courses toward their master’s degree in education at a CUNY college. They are eligible to earn an AmeriCorps Education Award worth $4,725 at the end of each of their first two years of teaching that they may choose to use toward the cost of their master’s degree. In return, TOP Scholars commit to teaching in New York City’s public schools for two years following the completion of their master’s degree. All applicants must posses an excellent academic record and be passionate about making a difference in the lives of New York City’s youth. Individuals interested in teaching science, mathematics, or Spanish must have majored in or completed significant coursework in one of these fields (or a related discipline, such as applied science, accounting, engineering, or computer science). Applicants must be U.S. citizens or a permanent resident intending to seek citizenship. Consider a career in teaching. Consider making a difference.
