Program Overview

Program Description:
The MA considers the post-war literatures of France, Germany, Italy and Spain in a trans-national perspective. The course focuses on the study of important literary texts - read in translation - and analyses the relationship of literature to society and culture. It will be divided into four modules. Each module will centre on a different genre. The first module will look at the development of literary theory in the four national cultures. The three remaining modules will look at autobiography, travel-writing and the novel of the city. The modules will address questions of identity, memory and a sense of place. The approach throughout will be to locate texts, whether theoretical or fictional, within a socio-historical framework.
