The City and Regional Planning (CRP) Department at Cal Poly offers two master degree choices: the professional Master of City and Regional Planning (MCRP) degree is fully accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board. The MCRP/MSE degree is a joint program with the Civil Engineering Department that offers specialization in Transportation Planning. MCRP students can emphasize: urban design; environmental planning and sustainability; transportation planning; or community development.
The MCRP program is recognized with awards and high rankings and serves as a curriculum model nationally and internationally for its contributions to planning education and practice. Planetizen’s National Rankings for Graduate Planning Programs identifies Cal Poly’s MCRP program as:- #1 in the nation for programs without a Ph.D.
- #19 overall in the nation (including programs with a Ph.D.)
- #6 overall in the Western United States (including programs with a Ph.D.)
The MCRP program offers a great opportunity for those seeking a professional degree following undergraduate studies. Students come from a wide array of fields including the liberal arts, environmental sciences, architecture and civil engineering.
Career Opportunities
Graduates from the MCRP program work in planning offices of city, regional and state agencies. Some enter the world of private consulting. And others work for non-profit and advocacy organizations. The training prepares graduates for mid-level and management positions; thus some graduates rise to principals in consulting firms, planning directors or City Managers.
