Program Description:

Asian University’s profile as an international university, delivering its courses through the medium of English, employing Thai and expatriate staff, and recruiting students from a variety of countries besides Thailand, makes it an ideal centre for educational development in such areas as teacher training, educational research and professional development. The Master’s degree will focus on the practical skills required by teachers to deliver four key subjects, English language, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science, through the medium of English. The programme will enhance understanding of language-related needs of learners from non-English speaking backgrounds and explore ways of meeting those needs. In line with contemporary research into learning and pedagogy, potential methodologies in the key subject areas will be tested, evaluated and implemented. There will be a strong emphasis on what goes on in the classroom, and the programme will make use of secondary schools in the area and the student’s own place of work (if any) to explore issues about how the key subjects are most effectively learned and taught. The programme aims to provide an atmosphere in which students take responsibility for their own learning, read widely, reflect on their professional practices, and are actively inquiring in their outlook. Consequently traditional ‘stand and deliver’ lectures will be kept to a minimum, with students spending considerable amounts of time in class and outside on practical ‘hands on’ tasks (alone, in pairs or in small groups) with the support and feedback of programme tutors.

The basic M.Ed programme structure, as shown in the table below, consists of 8 compulsory taught courses and either 1 elective and an M.Ed thesis or 3 electives and a Capstone Project. Plan A (2) (Thesis Option) To complete the M.Ed degree, students have an option to undertake the 12-credit M.Ed thesis. After completing the 3 core courses and 3 compulsory courses and 4 option courses in one of the key subject areas, students can start work on the M.Ed thesis. Plan B (Coursework and Capstone Project) Students may select to substitute a Capstone Project plus two additional major electives in lieu of the M.Ed. thesis. The programme provides for a full-time track as well as a part-time track. The Full-Time track is ideally designed for qualified applicants who can make a full-time commitment to their M.Ed for three consecutive semesters, completing their thesis or project in the third semester. In contrast, the Part-Time track is designed for those who can manage only a partial course load for a variety of reasons, including existing work and/or family commitments.

Although large in campus size, Asian University is small in student numbers. In classes of less than 20 students, interaction is intense and studying is based on projects and cases. No chance to get a good grade for memorizing the textbook - our lecturers aim to make you understand as they do.
