How it Works

Studying abroad is a life-changing opportunity that allows you to take courses in a foreign country while earning credits toward your degree at home (if desired). The process typically begins with researching programs that align with your academic and personal goals, followed by submitting an application.

Once your application is accepted, we work with you to fully enroll in the program and prepare for your travel. While abroad, you immerse yourself in a new culture, attend classes, and often take part in other travel experiences. At the end of the program, the credits you earn can typically be transferred back to your home institution.

How to Pick a Program

Define Your Goals and Priorities

Before choosing a study abroad program, consider what you hope to gain from the experience. Are you looking to improve language skills, explore a specific culture, gain professional experience, or complete coursework in your major? Identifying your academic, career, and personal goals will help narrow down your options.

Choose Your Ideal Destination

Think about which country or region aligns with your interests and goals, while also keeping an open mind to options recommended by your advisors! Consider factors such as culture, climate, cost of living, and local opportunities. If language immersion is important, you may want a non-English-speaking country, while others may prioritize destinations with a strong academic reputation in their field of study or benefits to the geographical location (think: weekend trips!).

Choose the Right Study Abroad Term and Duration

Study abroad programs vary in length, so it’s important to choose a term that fits your academic schedule, budget, and personal preferences. Options include:

  • Short-Term Programs (Summer, Winter, or Spring Break): These typically last a few weeks to a couple of months and are great for students who want a study abroad experience without committing to a full semester.
  • Semester-Long Programs: A popular choice for students looking to immerse themselves in a new culture while staying on track with their degree requirements.
  • Full Academic Year: Provides the deepest level of cultural and academic immersion.

Consider how the program duration aligns with your graduation timeline, financial situation, and personal comfort level with being away from home. If you have any questions or concerns, just ask us, we’re here to help!

Consider Academic Compatibility

Ensure the program offers courses that align with your major or academic requirements—if that’s a priority for you. Know that you can still study abroad without transferring credits if you want to! However, if credit alignment is important to you, make sure to check if the credits will transfer back to your home institution, and review course availability, language of instruction, and grading systems. Your advisors will help you with this process!
